Harghita awarded European Gastronomic Region status for 2027

In a remarkable achievement, Județul Harghita has been designated as a European Gastronomic Region for the year 2027. This title, awarded by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Art, and Tourism, highlights the rich culinary heritage of the region and its potential to attract visitors from around the world.

Local specialties will take center stage during a series of events designed to showcase the unique flavors of Harghita. Traditional dishes such as pâinea cu cartofi, hearty tocănițe, and matured cheeses will feature prominently, inviting guests to explore the diverse gastronomic landscape.

Among the culinary treasures is ciorba from the village of Ciumani, which includes onion, carrot, smoked pork meat, and traditional noodles known as poeka. This dish, often enriched with dried plums, exemplifies the blend of Secuiesc, Romanian, Hungarian, and Armenian flavors that characterize Harghita's cuisine.

Magda Bortolis, a local resident, reflects the community's commitment to maintaining culinary traditions. The region's gastronomy is marked by its hearty meals, slow-cooked stews, and nutrient-rich potatoes, all made possible by the lush pastures of Transylvania, which are home to thousands of medicinal plants and flowers.

Ilyés Levente, a chef in Odorheiul Secuiesc, is at the forefront of this culinary movement. He teaches cooking classes for both amateurs and professionals, sharing his expertise in creating dishes that highlight local ingredients. One of his signature preparations features a filling of burduf cheese, sour cream, pepper, and truffle paste, served alongside lamb ribs and leg in white wine sauce.

To be part of an online gastronomic platform, local restaurants must offer at least five authentic Harghita dishes on their menus. This initiative aims to ensure that visitors can experience the true essence of the region's culinary offerings.

Attila Szász, a representative of a local gastronomic festival, expresses hope that the European Gastronomic Region title will provide an opportunity to showcase Harghita's unique culinary identity. The hyper-seasonal nature of the region's cuisine means that recipes are continuously evolving based on fresh, available ingredients, ensuring that each dining experience is one-of-a-kind.
