Romania's Parliament takes a significant step towards unification with Moldova
A legislative proposal for the unification of Romania with the Republic of Moldova has been submitted by the S.O.S Romania parliamentarians. This initiative, introduced on April 14, has garnered attention as it has passed tacitly through the Chamber of Deputies after the 45-day deadline was exceeded.
Following this initial approval, the proposal will now move to the Senate, which serves as the decision-making body in this case. Notably, there was no plenary debate regarding the proposal, and it has received negative opinions from both the Government and various committees within the Chamber of Deputies, including the legal committee and the committee for human rights.
The former pro-Russian President of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, has openly criticized this move, claiming that Romanian politicians are engaging in an imperialist policy. Dodon expressed his regret over the Romanian authorities' actions and described it as shameful that Moldovan leaders either remain silent or tacitly approve of what he calls Romanian territorial expansionism.
Despite the criticisms, the Romanian Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to the principles outlined in the Final Act of the C.S.C.E. Conference in Helsinki, which allows for the peaceful and diplomatic modification of borders. Following the adoption of the law, the Romanian government will be empowered to initiate urgent negotiations with Chisinau authorities to finalize the unification process.
The international community will also be informed after the law's adoption, with notifications set to go out to the relevant authorities, including the U.S.A., N.A.T.O., O.N.U., and the E.U. This legislative development marks a pivotal point in the discussions surrounding Romania's relationship with Moldova, highlighting a significant moment in regional politics.
