Romania, Bulgaria, and Spain unite for joint air policing missions

Romania, Bulgaria, and Spain have taken a significant step towards enhanced security by signing a trilateral technical agreement for joint air policing missions. This collaboration will see Spanish air forces conducting aerial patrols in Romanian airspace, bolstering the region's defense capabilities.

The announcement, made by the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense on Thursday, highlights the importance of transborder operations in the framework of NATO. The agreement builds on a bilateral understanding between Romania and Bulgaria established in 2021, which allows for the participation of third-country fighter jets, namely from Spain, in air policing operations.

In addition to patrolling Romanian airspace, Spanish forces will also be available to conduct operations in Bulgaria if necessary. These joint surveillance missions are part of NATO's mechanisms aimed at ensuring the security of airspace along the eastern flank, particularly in proximity to Ukraine.

This cooperation not only strengthens coordination in air defense and missile defense among allies but also enhances collective defense capabilities, ensuring a robust response to any emerging threats in the region.
