Romania takes a leading role in global fight against human trafficking
Romania has emerged as a co-leader in a monumental operation led by Europol to combat human trafficking, resulting in the rescue of over 2,000 victims. The operation, named 'GLOBAL CHAIN', spanned from June 8 to June 12, 2026, and involved the coordination of 59 countries, bringing together more than 40,000 officers.
In total, 2,070 potential victims were identified, out of which 1,908 were adults and 162 were minors. Alarmingly, over 64% of the female victims were trafficked for sexual exploitation, while more than 80% of the minors detected faced similar fates. The operation also revealed troubling statistics: 20.9% of female victims were trafficked for forced criminality, and 11.3% for forced labor.
Throughout the operation, authorities identified over a thousand suspects, leading to the arrest of 1,024 individuals, including 334 for trafficking-related offenses. The scale of the effort is underscored by the detection of 201 additional trafficking suspects and the initiation of 465 new investigations.
The operation reached far beyond Romania, with reports of potential victims coming from 45 different countries. Many of the victims originated from Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, Nepal, and Moldova, illustrating the global nature of the trafficking crisis.
In Belgium, police operations resulted in 17 arrests, with 22 minor victims identified, while in Iceland, authorities recorded over 50 clients involved in suspected prostitution activities, leading to five arrests and the identification of 16 potential victims of sexual exploitation.
Additionally, in Moldova, a human trafficking network was dismantled, revealing that three minors had been coerced into prostitution through manipulation and threats. In Ukraine, authorities charged two individuals with labor exploitation, highlighting the ongoing challenges in the region.
This collaborative effort not only reflects Romania's commitment to combating human trafficking but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in protecting vulnerable populations and bringing perpetrators to justice.
