Romania sees rise in households adopting solar energy solutions

The adoption of solar energy in Romania is on the rise, with 11% of households now equipped with photovoltaic systems. This marks an increase from 8% just a year ago, highlighting a growing trend towards renewable energy sources among Romanian residents.

According to a recent study published on Monday, 17% of Romanians plan to install a photovoltaic system within the next 12 months, indicating a strong interest in solar energy. E.ON Energie România has reported significant activity in this sector, having installed over 1,200 residential photovoltaic systems in the first half of 2026, representing a 30% increase compared to the same period last year.

Since 2020, more than 10,500 photovoltaic systems have been installed for residential clients. The study, conducted in June 2026 on a sample of 1,000 participants aged 25 to 65, reveals that important factors influencing the choice of photovoltaic systems include warranty, installation price per kW, and the availability of technical support and maintenance services.

The trend towards energy storage is also notable, with the share of E.ON systems that include storage batteries reaching 91% in the first half of this year. Furthermore, 15% of participants expressed intentions to purchase a storage system, while over 51% of current photovoltaic system owners plan to invest in a storage battery within the next year.

Households can save up to 70% on their electricity bills by harnessing solar energy. For an average monthly consumption of up to 255 kWh, a photovoltaic system with a power of 3.3 kW and a 5 kWh storage battery can yield annual savings of up to 3,300 lei. For those consuming up to 500 kWh monthly, a 5.5 kW system with the same storage capacity can provide savings of up to 6,300 lei annually.

With a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of +/- 3.1%, the study underscores the growing momentum behind solar energy adoption in Romania, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
