06 Jul 2026, 15:10

Universitatea de Medicina si Farmacie ‘Carol Davila’ din Bucuresti has announced an ambitious new initiative, the Bioinnovative Center for Integrated Medical Data and Research in Bucharest, known as BioMedLake. This project aims to significantly enhance biomedical research infrastructure, integrate medical data, and accelerate national collaboration in medical research.

With a total value of 99,676,414 lei, BioMedLake is fully funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the Health Program. This initiative aligns with the European Union's efforts to support projects compatible with the Strategic Technologies Platform for Europe (STEP).

The project will create a complex infrastructure, including a Data Lake and High-Performance Computing (HPC) system, for the secure collection, storage, and processing of data from at least 30 partner medical units. It will also feature an integrated research platform that includes a mobile application for patients, a clinical study management system, research dashboards, and connectivity interfaces.

Key components of BioMedLake include the development and validation of three artificial intelligence modules directly applicable to medical research. These modules will focus on data cleansing, semantic harmonization, and the management of clinical registries, as well as facilitating multimodal clinical meta-search.

Under the leadership of project director Octavian Andronic, BioMedLake aims to support multicenter clinical studies, retrospective research, and personalized medicine, while also advancing the training of researchers and medical staff. The initiative promises to publish 20 scientific articles and will organize two conferences to disseminate project results, alongside participation in national and international conferences.

By fostering responsible utilization of medical data for research and innovation, BioMedLake represents a strategic investment in building a national pillar for biomedical research in Romania. The project is led by Viorel Jinga, the rector of UMF ‘Carol Davila’, with support from prorector Stefan Busnatu and partnerships with several other esteemed institutions.
