In an impressive leap, electric vehicle registrations in Romania have surged by 76.6% in the first half of the year, now representing 8.5% of the total market. This growth highlights a positive shift towards sustainable transportation options in the country.

Overall, new car registrations saw a modest increase of 0.3% compared to the same period last year, with a total of 16,008 vehicles registered in June 2026, marking a 53% rise from the previous year. The electric vehicles, particularly battery electric vehicles (BEVs), are leading this transformation.

In June, electrified vehicles claimed a strong market share of 64%, with full electric cars accounting for 9.4%, up from 3.7% last year. Plug-in hybrids also saw growth, now at 9.6%, compared to 6.7% in June 2025.

Among the best-selling electric models, the Tesla Model Y topped the charts with 793 units sold, a remarkable 378% increase. Other popular models included the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Dolphin Surf, showing a clear consumer preference for electric options.

The hybrid vehicle market is also thriving, with mild-hybrid registrations increasing by 29.7%, now comprising 24% of total registrations. Notably, 79% of mild-hybrid vehicles utilize gasoline, while 10% run on GPL, and 11% on diesel.

On the SUV front, this segment leads the market with a 58.5% share. The popularity of various vehicle classes remains evident, with Class C holding a 21% share, followed by Class B at 12.8%.

In terms of specific models, the Dacia Duster remains a favorite, leading new registrations with 1,553 units, despite a 55% decrease from last year. Other notable mentions include Toyota Corolla and Yaris Cross, both reflecting the growing consumer shift towards more efficient vehicles.

The increase in registrations isn't limited to personal vehicles; light commercial vehicles also saw a 10.9% rise, with electric light commercial vehicles reaching 257 units in the first half of 2026, although slightly down from last year's 333 units. Heavy commercial vehicles and buses enjoyed a significant 35% increase in registrations, demonstrating broader market growth across various vehicle types.

This shift towards electric and hybrid vehicles not only represents a trend in consumer preferences but also an essential step towards a more sustainable future in Romania's automotive landscape.
