Romania has been granted 636.9 million euros from the Modernization Fund, a significant boost aimed at enhancing its energy systems. This funding will specifically be used for the development of independent energy storage installations using battery technology.

The Modernization Fund, launched in January 2021, has now allocated a total of 23.2 billion euros to support energy modernization across Europe. Romania's allocation stands out among its regional peers, with Hungary receiving 552.3 million euros and the Czech Republic 516.8 million euros.

Beyond Romania, other countries are also benefitting from this initiative. Greece will receive 233.9 million euros, while Poland and Lithuania will gain 180 million euros and 169 million euros, respectively. Smaller allocations include Croatia with 109 million euros and Portugal with 81.4 million euros.

The projects funded by the Modernization Fund encompass a variety of innovative energy solutions. For instance, in the Czech Republic, the focus is on decarbonizing district heating systems, while Estonia is working on replacing diesel vehicles with electric trolleybuses. Hungary is set to digitalize its electric networks, and Croatia is developing geothermal energy for heating.

The Modernization Fund is designed to assist 13 EU member states with a GDP per capita below 75% of the Union's average, highlighting its commitment to equal development across the region. The upcoming deadlines for submitting project proposals are set for August 11, 2026, for non-priority investments and September 8, 2026, for priority investments.
