Dolce far niente returns to Romanian cinemas after decades
'Dolce far niente', a film written and directed by Nae Caranfil, is making its debut in Romanian cinemas after being released internationally in 1998. This special occasion comes with a newly restored and remastered 4K version, allowing audiences to experience this cinematic gem for the very first time on the big screen.
The film, a co-production between Romania, France, Italy, and Belgium, is inspired by Frederic Vitoux's novel 'La Comedie de Terracina'. It imagines a fictional meeting between the young Henri Beyle and composer Gioachino Rossini in Italy in 1816. Featuring an international cast, 'Dolce far niente' includes notable actors such as Giancarlo Giannini, Francois Cluzet, Margherita Buy, Isabella Ferrari, and Pierfrancesco Favino.
The music for the film is composed by Nicola Piovani, an Academy Award winner known for his work on 'La vita e bella'. The restoration process, which took place from March to November 2025, involved various talented individuals including Răzvan Ungureanu for colorization, Cristian Comeagă as the director of photography, and Vlad Orășanu for sound restoration at MDV Production.
The special screenings of 'Dolce far niente' will take place in several cities, including Bucharest, Cluj, Iași, and Timișoara. In Bucharest, audiences can catch the film at Cinema Elvire Popesco on July 17 and 19 at 20:30, and again on July 22 at 19:30, with another showing on August 19 at 18:00.
