Ciugud leads the way in modernizing rural Romania through smart initiatives

Ciugud, a small commune in Romania, has transformed itself from an ordinary locality into a modernized example of rural development. This remarkable change began in 2005, when the mayor visited a commune in Spain and witnessed the benefits of a digitalized public administration.

With the help of European funds, Ciugud has attracted nearly 50 million euros for various projects aimed at improving infrastructure, education, culture, tourism, and social assistance. The first major project involved the installation of sewage systems, water supply, and road asphaltation, costing approximately 7.5 million euros.

In 2007, as Romania joined the European Union, Ciugud's local administration formed a dedicated team to pursue funding opportunities. This initiative allowed the commune to access additional resources, including the Phare program, which provided 50,000 euros for the acquisition of integrated software and computing technology.

The commune has also embraced sustainability by purchasing 21 electric buses and microbuses, along with charging stations to support them. These investments are part of a broader trend in Romania, where the concept of "smart village" is gaining traction, particularly in Transylvania.

Ciugud stands out as a reference point for the digitalization of rural Romanian villages, with fully digitalized educational facilities and innovative solutions for public services. The local administration has introduced online platforms for tax payments and document issuance, making life easier for residents.

Moreover, Ciugud has initiated educational programs focused on technology, as well as projects aimed at recycling and environmental protection. With its commitment to modernization, Ciugud ranks among the top communes in Romania for smart village projects, showcasing the potential of rural areas to thrive in the digital age.
