Transgaz and Kawasaki Heavy Industries partner to advance hydrogen transport technology

Transgaz, the operator of Romania's National Gas Transmission System, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, marking a significant step forward in the development of hydrogen transport technology. This collaboration, which took place on Tuesday in Tokyo during the fourth edition of the Romania-Japan Innovation Forum, aims to enhance the efficiency of hydrogen transportation through innovative infrastructure.

The project, named ROHYD, which stands for Romania and Hydrogen, is a pilot initiative focused on injecting hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines. With an estimated budget of 21 million euros, ROHYD will utilize state-of-the-art compression technology developed by Kawasaki, utilizing a next-generation centrifugal compressor.

Ion Sterian, the General Director of Transgaz, emphasized that developing research activities around hydrogen is a top priority for the company. The collaboration has the strong backing of both the Romanian and Japanese governments and is set to strengthen Transgaz's expertise in the energy transition.

Transgaz is also a member of the European Hydrogen Backbone, and plans for the National Gas Transmission System over the next decade include projects totaling over 4.9 billion euros, specifically targeting the transport of hydrogen through the conversion of natural gas infrastructure.

The implementation of the ROHYD project will not only test the implications of transporting a blend of natural gas and hydrogen but will also contribute to establishing industry standards and regulations. The insights gained from this initiative are expected to play a crucial role in creating a robust technical and legislative framework for hydrogen transport in Romania.

Furthermore, the collaboration aims to establish one of the largest hydrogen research centers in Europe, encompassing transportation and distribution sectors, as well as industries like metallurgy, petrochemicals, and refineries. This initiative is poised to have a significant impact on reducing CO2 emissions, marking an important milestone in Romania's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
