Ten Stolen Paintings Recovered in Romania Set for Return to Their Owners
In a remarkable recovery, ten stolen paintings from a residence in Italy have been retrieved in Romania. This successful operation highlights the effective collaboration between Romanian authorities and their Italian counterparts.
The paintings were stolen on August 23, 2024, from a home located in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. They were illegally brought into Romania, with total damages estimated at over 90,000 euros.
The Romanian Police, through the Inspectoratul General al Poliției Române (IGPR), announced the recovery following a thorough investigation. The effort was coordinated by the Parchetul de pe lângă Tribunalul Constanța, which received information about the paintings' presence in Romania.
Police conducted several home searches in Constanța on March 6 and 7, 2025, resulting in the seizure of the ten paintings, along with various storage media and computer systems. Four Romanian citizens are currently under investigation for aggravated theft and the illegal import of cultural goods.
This case was made possible through official judicial and police cooperation channels between Romania and Italy, with vital information exchanged via Europol. The recovered paintings are set to be returned to their rightful owners, marking a positive outcome in the fight against art theft.
