Romania's Wheat Exports Set to Thrive with Record Harvest
Romania's wheat for baking contains an impressive 12% protein, making it a valuable commodity on the international market. This week, the country’s wheat prices have shown an upward trend, buoyed by a forecast of hot weather in western European regions.
As the harvesting campaign approaches, the Romanian wheat sector is poised for success. The Algerian agency OAIC has recently purchased between 800,000 and 900,000 tons of Romanian wheat, with delivery scheduled for August. Romania stands out as one of the key winners of OAIC's auction, where prices offered by suppliers were around $5 per ton lower than in the previous auction.
This strategic move aligns with the growing demand for Romanian wheat, as Algeria was the second most significant destination for Romanian grain in the 2023/2024 market year. Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia is expected to maintain its status as the leading importer of Romanian wheat for the 2025/2026 season, with an estimated record import volume of 1.7 million tons.
The total volume of Romania's wheat exports for the 2025/2026 season is anticipated to be comparable to that of the 2023/2024 market year, thanks to a record harvest. Competitive pricing in the latter half of the season will further enhance Romania's position against other major suppliers in the Black Sea region.
