Romania's Men's Sabre Team Wins Bronze at World Fencing Championship

The Romanian men's sabre team has secured a bronze medal at the World Fencing Championship held in Hong Kong. This achievement marks Romania's second medal at the 2026 World Championships, showcasing the country’s strength in fencing.

The team, composed of Vlad Covaliu, Radu Nițu, Răzvan Ursachi, and George Dragomir, displayed remarkable skill throughout the tournament. They faced a tough semifinal against South Korea, where they narrowly lost 44-45, despite leading in the final moments.

In the bronze medal match, Romania triumphed over Hungary with a score of 45-39. Hungary initially took the lead at 10-3 after the first two bouts, but the Romanian team rallied back to secure the victory. The match was thrilling, with Romania equalizing at 44 before clinching the medal.

The path to the bronze was not easy; Romania had previously defeated Italy in the quarterfinals 45-36 and made an impressive showing against Venezuela and Great Britain, winning 45-30 and 45-17, respectively. Vlad Covaliu played a crucial role in the semifinal, winning his penultimate bout 12-5, while Radu Nițu entered the decisive round trailing 38-40.

Mihai Covaliu, a former coach of the team and an Olympic champion, provided support from the stands, cheering for his son, Vlad, and the rest of the team. Radu Nițu also made headlines earlier in the competition by winning the bronze medal in the individual sabre event at the same championship, contributing to a memorable outing for Romanian fencing.
