Romania's Heart Transplants Make a Difference Across Europe

Romania is making a profound impact in the field of organ transplantation, exporting hearts and saving lives across Europe. Since the beginning of the year, the country has successfully performed seven heart transplant surgeries, with three of these operations taking place at the Floreasca Hospital in Bucharest.

Despite these successes, the number of cardiac transplants remains low due to a shortage of compatible recipients. There are donors available, patients who are in a state of brain death, but finding compatible patients to receive the hearts proves challenging. The National Transplant Agency is actively working to develop transplant activities within Romania, striving to bridge this gap.

Romania's hearts are often transported through the Eurotransplant network, primarily heading to Germany and France. Thanks to advanced technology known as the perfusion system, harvested hearts can remain functional during transportation, making it feasible for teams from these countries to come and collect hearts when local patients cannot be matched.

Interestingly, Slovenia, with its population of just 2-3 million, boasts the highest number of cardiac transplants per capita, performing around 30 transplants annually. This comparison highlights the potential for growth in Romania's own transplant capabilities and the ongoing need for awareness and support for organ donation.
