Romania's financial markets show resilience and promise for future growth
Romania’s financial markets are demonstrating notable resilience, even amid international economic turbulence. Representatives from the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) and the Romanian Banking Association (ARB) recently gathered at a forum in the capital to discuss the pressing need for a stronger capital market.
A more robust capital market is essential for reducing dependency on the state budget and bank loans, which has been a long-standing goal for the country. ASF President Alexandru Petrescu emphasized that the capital market is showing signs of maturation, evidenced by the growth of private pension funds, which now account for nearly 12% of the GDP, valued at over 246 billion lei.
Petrescu highlighted that these private pension funds not only offer prospects for sustainable financial futures but also generate vital investments within the economic ecosystem. Meanwhile, Florin Dănescu, the executive president of ARB, pointed out that legislative risks are a significant concern for the banking industry, with unpredictable legislative initiatives impacting the business environment.
Dănescu further noted that such initiatives contribute to maintaining high financing costs in Romania. Both the ASF and ARB are advocating for legislative stability, recognizing that the development of financial markets hinges on a predictable regulatory framework. Overall, the positive trends in Romania’s non-banking financial markets reflect a bright future ahead.
