Romania's electric vehicle market sees steady growth in July 2026

In July 2026, Romania welcomed 1,526 newly registered electric vehicles, marking a significant step forward in the country’s transition to sustainable transportation. This total includes 1,399 passenger cars and 127 electric utility vehicles, demonstrating a growing acceptance of electric mobility among various vehicle types.

Overall, the total number of vehicles registered in July 2026 reached 44,496, with electric vehicles comprising 3.43% of the market. After accounting for 171 vehicle deregistrations, the net balance for the month stands at 1,355 electric vehicles, representing 3.05% of all relevant registrations. This brings the estimated total of active electric vehicles in Romania to 73,307, showcasing a vibrant and evolving market.

Leading the pack in July was Tesla's Model Y, with 141 units registered, followed closely by the Tesla Model 3 at 123 units. BYD made a notable impact as well, with its Dolphin Surf and Sealion 7 models securing third and fourth places, registering 97 and 74 units respectively. Rounding out the top five was the Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric, with 53 units.

Other noteworthy mentions include the Hyundai Kona Electric with 46 units, Mazda 6e with 41, and MG4 Electric with 40 registrations. The Ford Puma Gen-E and both the BYD Atto 2 and Renault Zoe tied for tenth place, each with 31 units.

A closer look at the brands reveals that Dacia leads the market with 18,611 active electric vehicles, holding a significant 25.39% share. Tesla follows with 13,594 units and an 18.54% market share, while Volkswagen, Renault, and Hyundai also show strong presence with 5,898, 5,466, and 4,588 units respectively.

The growth trajectory of BYD has been particularly impressive, contributing to the overall upward trend of Romania's electric vehicle market. With traditional European manufacturers alongside emerging Chinese brands making strides, the future looks promising for electric mobility in Romania.
