Romania's corn production expected to rise despite lower cultivated area

In an interesting turn of events, Romania's corn production in 2026 is projected to surpass that of 2025, despite a decrease in the area cultivated. The total expected yield for 2026 is estimated at 7.882 million tons, which is an encouraging sign for farmers.

The area cultivated with corn in Romania for 2026 is less than 1.7 million hectares, marking the smallest size in at least the last 12 years. This decline follows a trend where the cultivated area dipped below 2 million hectares for the first time in 2025, when it was 1.969 million hectares.

Interestingly, the 2026 corn area is over 24% smaller than the average of the past five years. Despite this, the yield per hectare is set to reach 4.64 tons, which is more than 24% higher than the five-year average.

In contrast, the overall cereal production for Romanian farmers is on the rise, with a total estimated at over 25.55 million tons for 2026, reflecting an increase of nearly 19% compared to the five-year average. Notably, wheat production is also expected to reach a record 13.064 million tons, a remarkable 34% above the five-year average.

The area cultivated with wheat in 2026 stands at 2.254 million hectares, and the average yield per hectare for this crop is projected at 5.8 tons. This increase in yields showcases the resilience and adaptability of Romanian farmers even amid challenges.

While the European Union is facing a substantial decrease in corn production in 2026, estimated at 48.5 million tons, Romania's farmers are showcasing their ability to maintain and even increase their outputs in key areas. The EU's total cereal production is predicted to be 264.275 million tons, down 4.67% from the five-year average.

In summary, while the cultivated area for corn in Romania may be shrinking, the anticipated rise in production and the overall increases in cereal yields highlight a promising outlook for the agricultural sector in 2026.
