Romania's Air Traffic Surpasses European Growth Rates

11 Jun 2026, 13:45

Romania is experiencing an impressive growth in air traffic, with an increase of over 10% that significantly exceeds the European average. Bogdan Mîndrescu, president of the Romanian Airports Association, highlighted this positive trend, noting that the country’s air traffic continues to rise faster than the broader European market.

However, there are concerns regarding potential challenges ahead. The rising cost of fuel, influenced by ongoing tensions in the Middle East, poses a threat to the industry's growth. Mîndrescu expressed hope that Romania can avoid the impacts of a potential fuel crisis, which could hinder the sector's development in the near future.

This year, the Annual Conference of the Romanian Airports Association is being hosted by Iași Airport, marking a significant occasion as it coincides with 100 years of commercial aviation in Iași. The first commercial flight on the Bucharest - Galați - Iași - Chișinău route in June 1926 is recognized as the start of commercial aviation in the region.

The conference brings together representatives from airports, airlines, authorities, and aviation industry specialists, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among airports, local authorities, the hospitality sector, and tourism operators for future success. Romania's airport infrastructure has seen rapid development in recent years, with all terminals and airports modernized, making them more advanced than many across Europe.

Director Romeo Vatră of Iași International Airport is among those leading discussions on the future of aviation in Romania. The growth trajectory of air traffic not only reflects the resilience of the sector but also showcases the country's commitment to enhancing its aviation landscape amid global challenges.
