Romanian IT Market Sees Local Innovators Among Global Giants

23 Jul 2026, 06:28

The Romanian IT market is on a promising trajectory, with local companies like UiPath and Bitdefender making their mark alongside international giants. UiPath, leading the chart with a remarkable turnover of 660 million euros in 2024, showcases the potential of homegrown talent in a landscape dominated by foreign capital.

A recent study titled "Romanian IT Market Study: Evolution and Perspectives" highlights the significant role that international companies play in Romania's IT export sector. Conducted by the Romanian Economic Monitor team at Babeș-Bolyai University in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Transilvania IT Cluster, the research reveals that many of the top players in the industry are indeed foreign, including names like IBM, Oracle, and Amazon Development Center.

Despite this, the presence of local enterprises is crucial. According to Bianca Muntean, manager of Transilvania IT Cluster, there is a growing number of Romanian companies that are innovating and developing their own products. She emphasizes that while international investments have significantly shaped the ecosystem, the real challenge lies in scaling more local companies to compete on a global stage.

Levente Szász, coordinator of the RoEM-UBB FSEGA team, points out that foreign investors have been essential in creating jobs and fostering a competitive economy in Romania. However, he stresses the importance of nurturing strong local companies that can contribute to the entrepreneurial ecosystem and maintain a robust connection to the local economy.

The study indicates that the proportion of Romanian companies remains consistent even among the top 100 in the industry. Muntean and Szász both agree that fostering successful local enterprises will be vital for the future of the Romanian IT sector, supporting the notion that local and international companies can complement each other rather than compete. As Romania continues to attract investment, the hope is to see a flourishing of local innovation that aligns with the global standards set by multinational firms.
