Romanian firefighters lend a hand to France in combating forest fires

28 Jun 2026, 14:24

A dedicated team of 40 Romanian firefighters has embarked on a mission to assist in monitoring and extinguishing forest fires in France. They left on Sunday, June 28, as part of a European Union-funded pre-positioning program aimed at supporting communities affected by wildfires.

This initiative, organized by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations Directorate (DG ECHO), seeks to enhance the response capacity of French authorities in managing vegetation and forest fires. The program is designed to reduce response times during such emergencies while improving the preparedness and interoperability of intervention modules from participating member states.

The Romanian contingent is well-equipped, having departed with three specialized fire-fighting vehicles, a 30,000-liter tanker, and a high-capacity 10,000-liter vehicle. Additionally, they brought along a first intervention and command vehicle, a drone, a shortwave radio vehicle, a minibus, and a logistical support container for fire interventions.

The areas where the Romanian firefighters will operate will be determined by French authorities, who can also request additional personnel and resources if needed. The current team will be replaced by another group of 40 firefighters on July 16, continuing the support effort.

This program is a proactive measure to assist French communities following severe wildfires in previous years, reflecting a strong commitment to collaborative disaster response within the European Union.
