Romania to receive over one million doses of vaccines to combat livestock diseases

Romania has accepted a donation of over one million doses of vaccines from the European Commission to combat the infection caused by the peste des petits ruminants virus and to address the ongoing outbreaks of sheep and goat pox. This significant step aims to stabilize the epidemiological situation and facilitate the gradual resumption of live animal trade.

The Romanian government adopted the necessary regulations during an extraordinary meeting on October 23, demonstrating its commitment to public health and agricultural stability. The vaccines, which will be received by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, are part of a strategic reserve activated by the European Commission at Romania's request.

The ongoing infections have led to restrictions on the movement of live sheep and goats, which are currently in place until December 31 of this year. These restrictions have not only affected trade but have also resulted in economic losses for farmers, prompting them to rally for the resumption of exports during a demonstration in front of the government in Victoriei Square.

Vaccination is viewed as a necessary measure for controlling and eradicating these diseases. It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the epidemiological landscape, creating conditions for the progressive lifting of restrictions on the trade of live animals and related products both within the European Union and beyond.
