Romania to Build Four Military Ships at Mangalia Shipyard Amid Economic Revival

Romania is set to construct four military ships at the Mangalia Shipyard, a crucial step that ties into the reception of other military products contracted by the Romanian Army. This project, initiated by the Ministry of Defense, underscores Romania's commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities.

Radu Miruță, the interim Minister of Defense, emphasized that the Black Sea must not be a vulnerability for Romania, the European Union, or NATO. His remarks highlight the strategic importance of this initiative as the country seeks to bolster its defense infrastructure.

The Mangalia Shipyard is currently undergoing a complex situation, being in bankruptcy procedures and publicly auctioned off. Despite these challenges, it is benefiting from a substantial plan aimed at economic and military revitalization, which includes the construction of the new ships.

The shipyard's debt is under dispute, estimated at around 196 million euros, while its liquidation value sits at 87 million euros. The successful realization of the ships is critical, as Rheinmetall, a key defense contractor, will not be able to fulfill remaining contracts for the Romanian Army without the completion of these naval vessels.
