Romania strengthens security at the Black Sea with international support

In response to recent security challenges at the Black Sea, Romania is taking proactive steps to enhance its defense capabilities. Nicușor Dan, the President of Romania, emphasized the importance of international collaboration during discussions at the end of the European Council.

The situation has been heightened by incidents involving two vessels that reported fires, believed to have been caused by drone attacks, with one of the ships located just 15 kilometers from Romania's shores. This alarming development highlights the need for robust security measures in the region.

Nicușor Dan discussed the broader implications of hybrid warfare and its impact on neighboring countries, including Romania. He articulated the necessity for military equipment to bolster defenses, which have been ordered through the SAFE program. Although these supplies are expected to arrive in 1-2 years, immediate assistance has been requested from allies.

France has been particularly responsive, offering support within 24 hours of Romania's request for necessary military equipment. This swift action reflects the strong relationships Romania has built with its allies, including the United States, Italy, Spain, Slovakia, and Portugal, who have all extended support in the past.

Dan also highlighted the importance of aerial and naval drones as threats in the Black Sea area, drawing a parallel to earlier challenges faced along the Danube River. He is committed to ensuring that Romania has the resources it needs to secure its waters and maintain stability in the region.

The SAFE program is set to provide permanent protection for Romania at the Black Sea, showcasing the country's dedication to safeguarding its national security while fostering cooperation with international partners.
