Romania set to receive €2.3 billion from PNRR funding
Romania is poised to receive €2.3 billion from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) tomorrow. This significant funding boost was announced by Alexandru Nazare during his hearing for the position of Minister of Finance.
The upcoming payment is part of the fourth request for payment, valued at €2.62 billion, which includes 38 milestones and 24 targets. These milestones and targets were favorably evaluated by the European Commission on May 14, 2026, and the request is free from any suspensions.
Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan has a total value of €21.41 billion, with €13.57 billion allocated as grants and €7.84 billion as loans. Once the payment for the fourth request is authorized, Romania will have accessed approximately €12.97 billion from the PNRR, achieving a total absorption rate of about 61%.
Nazare emphasized the importance of focusing on maximizing absorption in the next two months. He mentioned a rectification that will prioritize PNRR projects to ensure efficient use of funds.
Looking ahead, the target deficit is set at 6.2%, and Nazare indicated that there are no plans to increase VAT in 2026. The elimination of IMCA is scheduled for the end of 2026, which is seen as a move towards predictability in 2027. Additionally, private investments in 2027 will be crucial for budget balancing.
It is important to note that starting in 2027, Romania will no longer have access to PNRR resources, making the next few years pivotal for capitalizing on these funds.
