Romania maintains its position as the largest wheat exporter in the EU

Romania has confirmed its status as the largest exporter of wheat in the European Union, outpacing both France and Germany. This achievement comes as the country experiences record harvests for wheat, barley, and rapeseed, with an estimated wheat yield of 13.4 million tons.

In addition to wheat, the estimated harvest for barley sits at 3.3 million tons, while the same figure applies for rapeseed. Analyst Cezar Gheorghe noted that Romania has never witnessed such volumes of harvest in its history, marking a significant agricultural milestone.

The forecast for corn and sunflower seeds is also promising, with estimates indicating over 8 million tons of corn and nearly 2.7 million tons of sunflower seeds. This is a marked improvement from last year's sunflower yield of 1.9 million tons. However, it is worth noting that the area cultivated with corn has decreased by nearly one million hectares.

In Constanța County, 25,000 of the 420,000 hectares of arable land are dedicated to corn cultivation, with only 3,000 hectares being irrigated. Farmer Gheorghe Lămureanu expressed that this year has seen better precipitation in the Dobrogea region, which has positively impacted his crops.

Conversely, challenges persist in other regions, such as Bacău County, where farmer Iuri Leteanu reported a lack of rain for three weeks, resulting in dried corn and sunflowers. Without adequate water, the production levels are projected to be significantly low.

Despite these challenges, Romania stands out among the 27 European countries as it continues to show visible annual progress in agricultural output, ensuring its critical role in the region's food supply.
