Romania set to close final negotiation chapter for OECD membership

Romania stands on the brink of a significant achievement as it prepares to close the last of its 25 negotiation chapters for OECD membership. With 24 chapters already finalized, the nation is the most advanced among the eight countries currently seeking to join this prestigious organization.

As a member of the OECD, which includes 38 member states and accounts for 70% of global trade and 90% of capital investment, Romania aims to enhance its governance and economic practices. The country has already implemented over 100 reforms in its journey towards adherence, demonstrating its commitment to meeting the organization's standards.

Luca Niculescu, the Secretary of State, is overseeing the final steps in this process. Romania's goal is to complete its accession by the end of 2026, with a political consensus in Parliament backing the endeavor. A special committee exists within the Romanian Parliament dedicated to navigating the intricacies of this membership, emphasizing the unity of all political parties in this important national objective.

The OECD, founded in 1948 and succeeding the OECE, is often referred to as the best school of governance. It offers a platform for countries to analyze one another and share best practices, with over 300 expert working formats available for collaboration.

The final vote for Romania's membership will be conducted by the OECD Council, composed of ambassadors from member states, and requires unanimous approval. Notably, other nations such as Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Indonesia, Peru, and Thailand are also vying for membership. As Romania approaches this pivotal moment, it continues to set a benchmark for progress in the region.
