Romania secures two new EU-backed projects for critical metal recycling and processing

In a significant move towards bolstering its strategic resources, Romania has secured two new projects aimed at recycling and processing metals essential for various industries. One of these projects, developed by Eco Life Style, focuses on recycling, while the other, from Verde Magnesium, is dedicated to processing.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy by the European Union to reduce dependency on China, which currently dominates the supply of critical raw materials. With China having imposed export restrictions that could disrupt entire production chains in Europe, the EU is keen to diversify its supply chains and strengthen its resource capabilities.

The European Commission is supporting a total of 46 additional projects across 16 countries, with eight focusing on mining, 11 on refining, and 19 on recycling. This effort adds to the existing 47 projects already initiated within the EU framework. In Romania, three major projects are underway in Gorj, Hunedoara, and Bihor, aimed at extracting and processing graphite, magnesium, and copper.

The EU has mobilized €2 billion in funding for these strategic initiatives, with Romania set to receive €615 million for its projects. As noted by Stephane Sejourne, the European Commissioner for Industry, these developments signify the opening of new mines, the construction of factories, and the establishment of vital funding agreements.

Additionally, 25 of the initial projects have completed their environmental impact studies, and 17 are moving forward with construction permits. Sejourne also revealed plans to launch a new call for projects by the end of the year, signaling ongoing commitment to securing Europe's industrial future.
