Romania secures €10 billion in EU funding in just one year
In an impressive feat, Romania attracted 10 billion euros in European funds within a single year, a significant boost for the nation’s economy. This successful funding period took place from June 10, 2025, to June 10, 2026, under the guidance of Dragoș Pîslaru, the Minister of Investments and European Projects.
The impact of this funding is evident as the budget deficit has seen a notable reduction. By May 2026, the deficit was 1.75% of GDP, amounting to 35.94 billion lei, down from 64.23 billion lei in the same month the previous year. In 2025, the budget deficit stood at 3.35% of GDP, highlighting a positive trend in fiscal management.
Despite this progress, challenges remain. Economists warn that Romania could face an economic downturn in 2026 and may lose at least 5 billion euros out of the 9 billion euros expected through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) by August 31.
On a positive note, deposits from non-government clients have risen by 1.6% in May 2026, reaching nearly 683.366 billion lei, with an annual increase of 7.7%. Similarly, the non-government credit balance has also grown by 1.6%, totaling 465.042 billion lei in the same month.
However, Romania missed the June 7 deadline for implementing EU Directive 2023/970, which raises concerns about compliance. Additionally, hundreds of non-compliant radio equipment were found at Dragonul Roșu, resulting in penalties totaling 347,000 lei.
As the country navigates these economic waters, leaders from various sectors, including Valentin Lazea, chief economist at the National Bank of Romania, and Flavius Jakubowicz, president of the Association of Financial-Banking Analysts of Romania, are closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the importance of legal security in the banking sector.
In local news, the route of line 205 will be diverted on Friday between 9:00 and 11:00 for a military ceremony marking 'National Flag Day.' Meanwhile, Cristina Chiriac, president of the National Confederation for Female Entrepreneurship, continues to advocate for women's contributions to the economy, underscoring an ongoing commitment to progress across Romania.
