Romania receives nearly 15 million euros in EU emergency aid for farmers
The European Union has allocated 56 million euros in emergency aid to support farmers impacted by severe climate events across several member states, including Romania, which will receive 14.8 million euros. This funding aims to help farmers recover from significant damages incurred in recent years due to adverse weather conditions.
The EU member states approved the proposal from the European Commission this past Monday. The funds, drawn from the agricultural reserve, will assist farmers in Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia, and Slovenia, in addition to Romania. Portugal will receive the largest share, amounting to 30 million euros, while Cyprus will receive 4.6 million euros, Croatia 4.4 million euros, and Slovenia 2.8 million euros.
This aid is crucial for farmers who cultivate arable land, produce fruits, nuts, and olives, and those engaged in mixed farming, including livestock. The budget allocated can be supplemented with up to 200% from national funds, providing further support to those in need.
Farmers across these countries have faced considerable losses, particularly in 2025 and the first half of 2026. Portugal experienced devastating impacts from Storm Kristin in early 2026, leading to significant agricultural losses. In Romania, severe drought and repeated heatwaves during the summer of 2025 notably affected corn and sunflower yields. Similarly, Cyprus dealt with prolonged drought conditions that raised animal feeding costs and diminished agricultural output.
Croatia faced extreme cold temperatures and excessive rainfall, disrupting the harvest of various crops, including fruits and sugar beets. Slovenia's spring frost also reduced apple production, highlighting the widespread challenges faced by farmers in the region.
The eligible agricultural sectors in these countries vary, with Romania focusing on corn and sunflowers, while crops such as olives and grapes are targeted in Portugal, and citrus fruits in Cyprus. National authorities are tasked with ensuring that farmers receive this vital support swiftly, with distribution expected to occur by February 28, 2027.
