Romania ranks seventh globally for affordable fixed internet
Romania has achieved a commendable seventh place in the world ranking for affordable fixed internet, with an average monthly cost of just $8.19. This remarkable standing was highlighted in a recent study published by Broadband Genie, which analyzed 2,631 fixed internet subscriptions from 214 countries and territories.
The study collected pricing data between January 27 and February 10, 2026, revealing significant disparities in internet costs worldwide. For instance, Iran boasts the lowest average monthly cost at $2.61, while Ukraine follows in second place at $5.35. Other countries that made the top ranks include Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Mongolia.
At the other end of the spectrum, Wallis and Futuna has the highest average monthly cost at a staggering $373.88, followed by Turkmenistan at $286.24 and the Turks and Caicos Islands at $252. The report indicates that the high costs in these islands and territories are largely due to the challenging infrastructure required to build and maintain internet services.
Interestingly, the study also points out that in Turkmenistan, state control over service providers limits competition, contributing to higher prices. Overall, the stark contrast between the lowest and highest costs—ranging from $2.61 in Iran to nearly $374 in Wallis and Futuna—highlights the diverse landscape of internet accessibility around the globe.
It's important to note that the study excluded 22 states for lacking credible data, including notable regions such as North Korea, Congo, Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, Sudan, and Cuba. This comprehensive analysis underscores Romania's achievement in providing affordable internet access, positioning it favorably on the global stage.
