Romania poised for remarkable agricultural growth by 2026

22 Jun 2026, 19:03

Romania could see its best agricultural year in the last five years by 2026, with estimates indicating a significant increase in the production of cereals and oilseeds. This year's production is projected to reach approximately 30.5 million tons of wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflower.

In 2025, Romania achieved over 29 million tons of cereals, and the previous year saw exports of cereals and oilseeds reach 17.6 million tons. These exports contributed 5.3 billion euros to the economy, with 2023's figures nearly one billion euros higher than those in 2024.

The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector positively impacted the GDP, showing a growth of 6.6% compared to the previous year. This sector generated an estimated value of 57.5 billion euros, driven by favorable conditions such as winter and spring rains that supported crop development.

Realistic estimates suggest that wheat production could exceed 12 million tons, while rapeseed might yield over 2 million tons. The anticipated production for 2026 is about 35% higher than in 2022, a year significantly affected by drought and extreme temperatures that reduced yields in several regions.

Despite the promising forecasts, farmers have expressed concerns over unsatisfactory cereal prices. The agricultural sector has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including preventive concordats, insolvencies, and bankruptcies. Dragoș Telehuz, who operates around 600 hectares of farmland in Ialomița County, exemplifies the resilience and hard work of farmers looking to overcome these obstacles.
