Romania leads Europe in plum production with a promising harvest ahead

Last year, Romanian fruit growers harvested approximately 600,000 tons of plums, placing Romania at the top of the European plum production chart. This impressive achievement highlights the country's rich agricultural heritage and the dedication of its farmers.

Looking ahead, estimates for the current year indicate an even richer plum harvest. Some local producers can collect up to 30 kilograms of plums from a single tree, showcasing the potential of Romania's diverse plum cultivation, which includes 28 different varieties.

The average price for a kilogram of plums has reached 5 lei, as buyers increasingly choose Romanian plums for their intense flavor and their ease of preparation for winter preservation. The quick separation of the flesh from the pit makes these plums particularly desirable for traditional recipes, with many households safeguarding old methods for making jam, compote, and magiun.

Firmer plums are favored for conservation, as a significant portion of Romania's plum harvest is destined for distillation, contributing to the country's renowned production of țuică, rachiul, and pălinca. Additionally, plums offer health benefits, supporting the digestive system and providing potassium and vitamin K.

Despite these advantages, Romania faces challenges in the market. The lack of modern cold storage infrastructure has led to a reliance on imported plums, despite the country having the largest area cultivated with plum trees in Europe. Supermarkets predominantly offer imported products, and small-scale fruit growers often struggle to meet the daily supply demands of national chains.

In contrast, farmers in Poland, the Netherlands, and Greece are successfully organized into large cooperatives, a model that could benefit Romanian farmers as they navigate the complexities of distribution and sales. With a brighter harvest on the horizon, there is hope for the future of Romania's plum industry.
