Romania inaugurates its first mountain trail for the visually impaired

27 Jun 2026, 16:21

A significant milestone for accessibility in Romania has been reached with the inauguration of the country's first mountain trail designed specifically for visually impaired individuals. This pioneering project, located in the Ciucaș Mountains, was officially opened on Saturday, June 27, and aims to enhance the outdoor experience for those with visual disabilities.

Starting from Valea Berii, near the Water Factory in Cheia, the trail ascends to the Horn at the base of Vârful Ciucaș. It features tactile maps inscribed in Braille to aid orientation and smart audio sensors from the StepHear system, which provide users with real-time information about their location through a mobile application.

This project is a collaborative effort led by the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU), with significant contributions from the National Authority for the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (ANPD), the Romanian Association of the Blind, and several NGOs and private partners, including Greenpeace Romania, EduCaB, and Tech & Tonic.

As part of the initiative, users are required to hike the trail with a companion, especially since the upper section towards Vârful Ciucaș includes more technical areas that are not recommended for inexperienced individuals. This trail not only represents a national first but also serves as a model for best practices in including people with disabilities in outdoor activities.

The methodology and technology utilized in this project can be replicated on other mountain trails, marking the beginning of a broader program aimed at making Romania's natural heritage more accessible. The support from various organizations, including the Prahova Mountain Rescue Service and the Association 'În slujba muntelui', highlights the community's commitment to fostering inclusivity in nature.
