Romania hosts its first Women's U18 Handball World Championship

For the first time, Romania is proudly hosting the Women's U18 Handball World Championship, a significant milestone for the country and its sports community. The tournament features 32 of the most talented national teams and is taking place in four cities: Pitești, Mioveni, Râmnicu-Vâlcea, and Craiova.

A total of 116 matches are scheduled across these host cities, showcasing the skill and dedication of young athletes. The excitement is palpable, especially after Romania was set to organize a similar championship in 2020, which was unfortunately canceled due to the pandemic.

Narcisa Lecușanu, a former handball star and now a member of the Executive Committee of the International Handball Federation, emphasized the significance of hosting such a prestigious event. She noted that every country aspires to organize a world championship, highlighting the pride Romania feels in achieving this goal.

The tournament has already seen remarkable matches, including a thrilling encounter between Slovakia and Slovenia, which ended with a one-goal victory for Slovenia. Meanwhile, the game between Switzerland and Japan was ongoing, with Japan leading 13-10 at halftime. Egypt also made headlines with a narrow win over Korea, clinching the match by just one goal.

Lecușanu also shared insights into the tournament structure, detailing that the top two teams from each of the eight groups will advance to the knockout stage, while teams finishing in third and fourth place will compete in the President's Cup. Notably, this year marks the first time that no wildcard has been issued by the International Handball Federation.

The inclusion of Fiji as a participant from Oceania adds to the diversity and global nature of the competition. Reflecting on her journey, Lecușanu spoke about how her experiences as a high-performance handball player have influenced her life, reminding us that sport offers unique lessons in managing both joy and defeat.
