Romania experiences modest fuel price increases compared to EU neighbors
In a challenging landscape for fuel prices, Romania has shown resilience, recording a modest increase of just 29.4% in personal transport fuel costs in September 2026 compared to August 2025. This rise is significantly lower than the dramatic hikes seen in several other European countries during the same period.
For context, during August 2025, fuel prices in Romania had already escalated by 26.7%. In the broader European Union, the average increase in fuel prices for personal transport was strikingly higher, with many countries grappling with significant spikes. For example, Bulgaria saw an alarming 42.2% rise, while Estonia and Lithuania followed closely with increases of 40.6% and 40.2%, respectively.
In contrast, Romania's increase in fuel prices was among the lowest in the EU. While countries like Sweden experienced the highest increases for diesel and gasoline, Romania's growth rates were recorded at 3.0% for diesel and 4.2% for gasoline in September 2026, showcasing a more stable price environment.
Even when looking at the overall fuel price trends in the EU, with a substantial 31.4% increase from September 2025, Romania's numbers reflect a more gradual change, highlighting its resilience amid fluctuating global markets. The steady rises in July and August 2026, at 16.9% and 23.8%, respectively, also indicate that while the situation is evolving, Romania is managing to keep inflation in check compared to its EU counterparts.
As Romania navigates these economic challenges, the relatively lower fuel price increases may provide some relief to consumers, allowing for a more stable economic environment than in many other EU nations.
