Romania completes OECD accession process under Luca Niculescu's leadership

Romania has achieved a significant milestone by completing the accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), becoming the first among eight aspiring countries to do so. This accomplishment marks a pivotal moment for the nation, with Luca Niculescu, the designated Prime Minister, highlighting its importance during his recent appearance on Digi24's 'Jurnalul de Seară'.

Describing the OECD as 'the club of developed democratic countries in the world,' Niculescu emphasized the benefits of membership, which include increased investments and improved governance. He referred to the OECD as 'the best school of governance that exists in the world,' underscoring the potential for Romania to learn and grow as it joins this esteemed group of nations.

With 38 member states currently in the OECD, which includes countries from Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand, Romania's accession is a testament to the country's commitment to reform. Over 100 reforms have been implemented as part of the accession process, showcasing the dedication of various political parties and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating this journey.

While Niculescu noted that a small detail remains to be resolved, he expressed optimism that having a functioning government would simplify the final steps. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts over the past four years, receiving support from all political parties and prime ministers, which has been crucial in navigating the political landscape.

As Romania stands on the brink of finalizing its accession to the OECD, Niculescu remains hopeful, stating, 'We are very close.' He believes that with political stability, Romania can achieve its goals and that the support for the OECD project will ultimately benefit the nation and its citizens. Comparisons to Romania’s past accession to NATO and the European Union highlight the significance of this moment, as the country prepares to embrace new opportunities for growth and development.
