29 Jun 2026, 13:49

During a recent official visit to Romania, Israeli President Isaac Herzog emphasized the strong bond between Romania and Israel, marking 70 years of diplomatic relations. Herzog was welcomed by Nicușor Dan at the Cotroceni Palace on Saturday, where he highlighted the shared democratic values that unite the two nations.

Herzog participated in the commemoration of the Pogrom of Iași, a significant historical event that underscores the importance of remembrance and reconciliation. He noted that thousands of Israelis of Romanian origin serve as a living bridge between the countries, enriching their connection.

In his address, Herzog also discussed broader regional issues, including the recent memorandum of understanding signed by Israel with Lebanon, which he believes could lay the groundwork for lasting peace. He called on the international community to support Lebanon in its economic recovery, stressing the need for cooperative dialogue.

Herzog's remarks came amid ongoing tensions in Gaza and the West Bank, where he acknowledged the grave humanitarian situation. He stated that from October 7, 2023, to June 21, 2026, over 73,000 Palestinians from Gaza have been reported killed by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, with more than 173,000 injured.

In addressing these challenges, Herzog affirmed Israel's commitment to seeking peace with Syria and the Gaza Strip, advocating for immediate disarmament of Hamas as a prerequisite for the peace process. He encouraged Europeans who criticize Israel's actions to engage in constructive dialogue, underlining the importance of communication in resolving conflicts.
