Romania achieves minimum fiscal transparency standards set by the US
Romania has successfully met the minimum fiscal transparency criteria evaluated by the United States, as highlighted in the recently published Fiscal Transparency Report 2026. This achievement places Romania among 73 governments and entities out of 140 analyzed, demonstrating a commitment to responsible fiscal governance.
The evaluation, conducted by the US Department of State for the year 2025, emphasizes the importance of public access to key budgetary documents. Alexandru Nazare, the Minister of Finance, remarked that fiscal transparency is a crucial element for responsible governance, reinforcing the need for clear and accurate data regarding the management of the country’s financial resources.
In this year's assessment, 67 entities fell short of the transparency standards, while Romania stands out in the category of countries fulfilling the established requirements. The report noted that the updated criteria for 2026 now include the necessity for the publication of terms and conditions related to sovereign loans granted to foreign debtors, which is essential for preventing unfavorable lending conditions.
The commitment to fiscal transparency not only strengthens trust in markets but also supports economic sustainability and fosters a favorable business environment by reducing corruption risks. The Ministry of Finance has emphasized the importance of maintaining a high level of openness moving forward, ensuring that citizens have a clear view of the state budget.
This evaluation, mandated by the US Congress, involved consultations with various federal agencies and relied on information provided by US embassies and consulates. As Romania continues to uphold these standards, it reaffirms its ongoing efforts in fiscal transparency, a fundamental pillar of effective public financial management.
