Romania achieves fourth place at the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad

Romania proudly secured fourth place in the world at the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad (IOAI), held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from August 2 to 8. This remarkable achievement puts Romania ahead of countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, France, and Germany.

The Romanian team showcased their talent by winning three gold medals, two silver, and three bronze medals. Notably, David Georgescu from Colegiul Național "Constantin Diaconovici Loga" in Timișoara, Alexandru Thury-Burileanu from Colegiul Național "Mircea cel Bătrân" in Constanța, and Roland Petrean from Colegiul Național "Silvania" in Zalău each took home a gold medal.

Additionally, Mihnea-Teodor Stoica from Liceul Teoretic Internațional de Informatică in Bucharest and Darius-Adrian Dobre from Colegiul Național de Informatică "Matei Basarab" in Râmnicu Vâlcea earned silver medals. Bronze medals were awarded to Iulian Nistor from Liceul de Informatică "Tiberiu Popoviciu" in Cluj-Napoca, Daniel-Antoniu Bence-Muk from Colegiul Național "George Barițiu" in Cluj-Napoca, and Matei-Tudor Pop from Liceul Teoretic "Avram Iancu" in Cluj-Napoca.

The competition attracted approximately 500 students from over 100 countries, challenging them to solve complex problems that combined theoretical knowledge with practical applications of artificial intelligence. Participants worked on tasks that included reconstructing conversations from mixed audio fragments and predicting robot actions based on environmental cues and natural language instructions.

Support for the Romanian team's participation came from the Ministry of Education and Research, the Union of Computer Science Teachers in Romania (UPIR), and the Romanian Artificial Intelligence Hub (HRIA), which also provided hardware infrastructure for training. Robert Mihai Colca, one of the team coordinators and a doctoral student at the University of West Timișoara, emphasized the exceptional talent of Romanian students and the potential for high-level training, even with limited resources.

The university environment has actively contributed to the development of the AI Olympiad, creating a platform with problems, materials, and resources available for free to interested students. Mihai Nan, a faculty member at the National University of Science and Technology Politehnica Bucharest, noted that the performance of the Olympians should not be confused with the overall state of the education system.

With this year's impressive results compared to last year's total of eight medals—only one of which was gold—there is optimism for the future. Mihai Nan believes that extending access to resources year-round would help students prepare more effectively in this field. He also remarked that while it is not realistic for all Olympians to remain in Romania, it is crucial that they have reasons to return and contribute to the country's development.
