Romania achieves a hard-fought draw against Uruguay in Montevideo
After more than a year without positive results, Romania's rugby team secured a commendable draw against Uruguay, finishing the match 36 – 36 in Montevideo. This draw marks a significant achievement for Romania, who managed to earn four points in the standings after two rounds.
The match had a thrilling start, with Uruguay scoring the opening try just one minute in. However, Romania quickly responded, showcasing their prowess by scoring three tries within the first 12 minutes. Iliesa Tiqe, Tevita Manumua, and Logan Weidner each crossed the line, with Alin Conache successfully converting two of those tries and adding a penalty, bringing the score to an impressive 22 – 7 in favor of Romania by the 18th minute.
At halftime, the score stood at Uruguay 17, Romania 22, but the intensity continued into the second half. Ștefan Buruiană added another try for Romania after the break, which was also converted by Conache. As the game progressed, Romania led 36 – 29 in the 68th minute with a fifth try from Tevita Manumua, again converted by Conache.
Despite being reduced to 13 players momentarily due to Vlad Neculau receiving a yellow card, Romania held strong until Uruguay managed to score their fifth try, leveling the score at the final whistle. This draw against Uruguay, who had previously enjoyed five consecutive victories over Romania, is a promising sign as the team prepares for their next challenge against Samoa.
Romania currently sits at 22nd place in the World Rugby rankings, while Uruguay is ranked 16th. The team’s next match is scheduled for Saturday, where they will face Samoa, aiming to build on this positive momentum.
