29 Jul 2026, 21:12

For the first time, the relics of Saint Francis of Assisi will be brought to Romania, marking a significant moment for the faithful. These sacred relics, originating from the body of Saint Francis, will be displayed in a reliquary bust at the Sanctuarul Eparhial 'Maica Domnului' in Oradea.

The event, organized by the Eparhia Greco-Catolică de Oradea, will take place from July 31 to August 2, coinciding with the celebration of the Iertării de la Assisi. The year 2026 will celebrate the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis's passing, making this pilgrimage especially poignant.

The solemn reception of the relics is scheduled for Friday, July 31, at 17:30, at the sanctuary. Bishop Virgil Bercea of the Greco-Catholic Diocese of Oradea expressed that this pilgrimage is 'a blessing for our entire eparchial community and an invitation to be transformed by the example of Saint Francis.'

The pilgrimage program will feature Holy Liturgies, the Prayer of the Franciscan Crown, the Paraclisul Maicii Domnului, moments of reflection and personal prayer, opportunities for confession, and the veneration of the relics.

From August 1 at 12:00 to August 2 at 24:00, attendees will also have the chance to receive a plenary indulgence. The Eparhia Greco-Catolică de Oradea warmly invites believers from across the country to join this historic event, which is open to all.
