Philip Morris Romania's Otopeni Factory Achieves Gold Zero Waste Certification
The Philip Morris Romania factory in Otopeni has recently been awarded the prestigious Gold Zero Waste certification by TÜV SÜD, reflecting its commitment to environmental sustainability. This achievement highlights the factory's impressive performance in waste prevention, recycling, and composting, with over 95% success in these areas.
Over the past decade, Philip Morris International (PMI) has invested more than $730 million in transforming the Otopeni facility into one of the world's most modern production centers for smoke-free alternative products. The factory now focuses exclusively on producing consumables for heated tobacco, with over 90% of its output exported to markets across five continents.
In 2023, the export of smoke-free products from the Otopeni factory exceeded 1 billion lei, marking a significant growth of 2.6 times from 2021. Notably, Japan, known for its discerning consumers, is among the key markets for these products. Furthermore, last year, 43% of Philip Morris Romania's net revenue came from heated tobacco products, underscoring the growing demand for alternatives to traditional smoking.
PMI's global investment in research and development has surpassed $16 billion since 2008, with approximately 99.7% of this budget directed towards smoke-free products. Scientific research indicates that these alternatives can reduce emissions by an average of 95-97% compared to conventional cigarette smoke, reaffirming the factory's role in the company's strategy to mitigate the harmful effects of smoking.
The Otopeni facility not only contributes to public health through innovative products but also plays a vital role in the reindustrialization of Europe by adding high value and adhering to stringent quality standards. The factory's commitment to sustainability and innovation positions it as a leader in the industry, paving the way for a smoke-free future.
