New energy storage initiative to enhance stability in Romania and Bulgaria
A groundbreaking joint venture between PPC and Metlen is set to launch a 300 MW energy storage capacity in Bulgaria and Romania by the first quarter of 2027. This initiative marks the operational beginning of an intergovernmental agreement signed in spring 2025, aimed at developing battery projects with a total capacity of 1.5 GW and an energy storage capability of 3 GWh across Bulgaria, Romania, and Italy.
The collaboration will see the two groups embark on new storage projects in Greece, with capacities of 330 MW and 150 MW, respectively. The business model for this joint venture operates on a 50/50 partnership, combining PPC's commercial management expertise with Metlen's extensive experience in energy infrastructure design and construction.
PPC is set to strengthen its portfolio of photovoltaic and wind parks in Southeast Europe through this partnership. In the coming 12 months, 1,000 MW is expected to be implemented, highlighting a rapid development pace for these projects. The European Commission has already approved the establishment of this joint venture, paving the way for significant advancements in energy storage capabilities.
The planned storage stations will utilize liquid-cooled battery systems with a two-hour duration, employing LFP technology to enhance efficiency. These facilities are strategically located near renewable energy sources (RES) to optimize their performance and contribute to the overall stability of the electric system.
The agreement assures the timely construction and operational quality of the storage projects, reinforcing PPC’s goal of energy storage implementation within the next three years. This partnership represents a crucial step in Metlen's strategy to establish a strong presence in European energy storage projects, ensuring sustainable energy solutions for the future.
