New bridge enhances connectivity between Maramureș and Transcarpathia
A new road bridge over the Tisa River is set to transform the connection between Maramureș County in northwestern Romania and the Transcarpathia region of Ukraine. This infrastructure project will facilitate the movement of people and goods, creating new opportunities for businesses and residents on both sides of the river.
Connecting Sighetu Marmației and Bila Țerkva, the bridge is part of the larger initiative known as "Culoarele solidarității," which aims to strengthen economic ties and support local communities. With a total project value of approximately 49 million EUR, it has received 18 million EUR in funding from the European Union.
The new bridge, measuring 268.6 meters in length, will operate alongside the existing bridge, which currently accommodates traffic in an alternating single lane. The existing bridge is limited to vehicles weighing less than 2.5 tons, while the new construction eliminates these access constraints and allows for the transport of goods.
Designed with two parallel structures—one for each direction of traffic—the new bridge features two lanes for vehicles and dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the new border crossing point boasts a platform approximately 575 meters long, with distinct flows for passenger and freight traffic, along with document control lanes in both directions.
This investment will significantly increase border crossing capacity, enhance resilience in the region, and improve accessibility and mobility. It aligns with EU efforts to empower people to build a future in their home regions, reinforcing the importance of cross-border collaborations. The project is expected to bolster the local economies and strengthen the bonds between the communities of Maramureș and Transcarpathia.
