New Border Crossing Point to Strengthen Romania-Ukraine Relations

23 Jul 2026, 14:57

Romania is set to open a new border crossing point with Ukraine, enhancing cross-border connectivity and cooperation. The border point Sighetu Marmaţiei – Bila Terkva will be operational soon, following the government's recent approval of a memorandum to initiate the necessary steps for this development.

The new crossing will lead to changes in the current Sighetu Marmaţiei – Solotvino border point, which will no longer operate 24/7 but will instead function exclusively for pedestrian traffic from 08:00 to 20:00 daily. This adjustment is part of a broader response to requests from the Romanian community in Ukraine, local authorities, and the business environment in Maramureş County.

The proposal for this new border point is based on evaluations from Romania's diplomatic missions in Ukraine and conclusions from bilateral technical meetings. Additionally, the Ukrainian side has shown willingness to consider keeping the existing border crossing operational in a permanent capacity.

The modification of the agreement between Romania and Ukraine will occur through an exchange of verbal notes, adhering to the provisions of Law no. 590/2003 regarding treaties, as well as the stipulations of the existing bilateral agreement.
