Maia Sandu emphasizes the importance of citizen support for Union with Romania
Maia Sandu has declared that the Republic of Moldova would be safer if it were to unite with Romania. This statement underscores the significance of citizens' voices in determining the future of the nation, as she emphasized that the decision regarding Union must be supported by the majority of the citizens of Moldova.
Her remarks were made during the Security Forum in Chișinău on Friday, where she elaborated on the historical context that makes the idea of Union popular among many Moldovans. Sandu stated that those familiar with history understand the reasons behind the desire for Union, highlighting the ongoing discussion since Moldova's independence.
In her speech, Sandu referenced the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact while discussing the Union, pointing out that supporters invoke historical, identity, economic, and security reasons for their stance. She noted that a significant part of society supports the idea of Union based on these motivations.
However, she acknowledged that current surveys indicate there is not yet a majority in favor of Union. In contrast, there is a clear majority supporting Moldova's accession to the European Union, which Sandu explained would enhance the country's security.
Additionally, she recalled the declaration adopted by the Romanian Parliament in 2018 during the centenary of the Great Union, reinforcing the historical ties between the two nations. Ultimately, Sandu reiterated that the decision regarding potential Union lies with the citizens and that their will must be respected.
