Jonah Herscu appointed as head coach of Romania's national basketball team

Jonah Herscu, a seasoned basketball professional with 17 seasons of experience, has been named the new head coach of Romania's national basketball team. His impressive background includes coaching roles in the NBA, NBA G League, and WNBA, with notable experience as an assistant coach for the Chicago Bulls.

At just 34 years old, Herscu steps into this role after Mihai Silvășan concluded his two-and-a-half-year tenure. During his time in the NBA G League, Herscu led the Rip City Remix to their first playoff qualification in franchise history, showcasing his ability to foster success in competitive environments.

Herscu's career has spanned several prestigious organizations, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, and Chicago Sky. He has a strong connection to Romania, as his father was born in Bucharest, which adds a personal touch to his new role.

As head coach, Herscu will debut at the end of August, with Romania preparing for two important matches in the EuroBasket 2029 prequalifications. The team will first face Denmark on August 27, followed by a match against Bulgaria on August 30 at the Danubius Arena in Tulcea.

The decision to bring Herscu on board was influenced by the recent success of hosting FIBA U18 Women's EuroBasket 2026, Division B, where the Romanian women's national team finished in second place. This move signals a commitment to building on that momentum and striving for further achievements in international basketball.
