Direct satellite connectivity on smartphones begins testing in Romania

Vodafone and Orange have embarked on a groundbreaking journey to test direct satellite connectivity on smartphones in Romania. This innovative service, known as Device-to-Device (D2D), aims to ensure that users can stay connected even in the most remote areas of the country.

The American satellite constructor AST SpaceMobile is leading the testing efforts in Romania as part of a joint venture with Vodafone called Satellite Connect Europe. This initiative is a collaboration involving major players in the telecommunications sector, including Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone Ukraine.

Testing activities are currently taking place not only in Romania but also in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, and Ukraine. The tests are focused on enhancing satellite connectivity, which will complement existing terrestrial networks and provide coverage in regions where traditional communication equipment cannot be easily deployed.

The Romanian subsidiaries of Orange and Vodafone signed collaboration agreements with Satellite Connect Europe back in March, paving the way for these exciting developments. The D2D satellite connectivity testing is set to commence this summer, with the potential to revolutionize how customers in Romania access communication services.

With this technology, users will be able to utilize their mobile phones seamlessly in areas lacking conventional terrestrial signals.
