Decathlon's bicycle production in Romania contributes to sustainable growth

29 Jun 2026, 12:37

Decathlon is making significant strides in Romania, producing over 800,000 bicycles annually. This impressive output is enough to fill more than 13 FIFA-sized football stadiums each year, underscoring the brand's commitment to sustainability and active lifestyles.

The company's production unit in Timișoara is one of the most important manufacturing facilities in Southeast Europe. Opened in 2009, the Timișoara office has since taken on the coordination of operations for Central and Eastern Europe, reinforcing Romania's role in Decathlon's European strategy.

With a growing presence, Decathlon operates 32 stores across Romania and had around 1,600 employees in 2025. The company first began its production efforts in Romania in 2004 and has since expanded its offerings to include electric bicycles and specialized products for various sports, such as high-altitude climbing gear and the first airbag vest for equestrian use.

In addition to its production capabilities, Decathlon collaborates with various industrial manufacturers located in cities like Timișoara, Alba-Iulia, Iași, Bucharest, and Drobeta Turnu-Severin. The products made in Romania are sold throughout Europe under the label 'Fabricat în România'.

Looking ahead, Romania is projected to remain among the top three fastest-growing bicycle markets in Europe by 2025. As a sign of its growing importance, the EuroMed Partners Forum will be hosted in Timișoara in 2026, bringing together approximately 100 representatives from Decathlon's industrial partners across Europe and Africa. Raul Buzgar serves as the Production Country Director for Romania, guiding the company as it continues to thrive in this dynamic market.
